When can I apply for recertification?
6 months before the certification expiration with a grace period of up to 6 months after the certification expiration.

How many hours do I need to obtain my recertification?
20 hours of asphalt related instruction.

What is the recertification fee?
Effective January 1, 2021, it is $175 for your initial certification.  If you have a second certification that is renewed during the initial certification 5-year period that will be $100.

Who are checks made payable to when recertifying?
Checks are payable to NJSAT.  Money Orders are accepted.  Credit card payments are not accepted.

Who are membership checks made payable to?
Checks are payable to NJSAT.  Money Orders are accepted.  Credit card payments are not accepted.

Where can I find information on upcoming NJSAT events or training?
Go to www.njsat.org and click on events or training.

What is the fee to be a member of NJSAT?
$25 for the one calendar year or $75 for five years.

I have a certification, but I am not a member of NJSAT.
Membership status and certification status are separate. Anyone who is certified or recertified after January 1, 2021, has all the benefits of membership including notification of upcoming events and dinner meetings, reduced rates for dinner meetings and events, access to the NJSAT Website and your records for recertification and eligibility for the NJSAT scholarship.

Do I have to have a certification to be a member of NJSAT?
No.  Membership status and certification status are separate.

How long will it take for my recertification to be processed?
Once your application has been approved you will be notified via email to make your payment, this process may take up to 30 days. After your payment is received the Certification Certificate and Card will be sent out, this process may also take up to 30 days.

What can I expect to receive as part of my recertification?
Recertification applications will receive both an ID card and a certificate.

Along with recertification form and payment, what proof do I need for the hours for recertification?
When you send in your recertification form along with payment you are also required to send in a copy of your current ID card and any back-up material. For example, certificates of completion for online courses, other proofs of attendance, course curriculum. It is important, as well as your responsibility, to make sure you are checked in when attending any events that you will use toward your recertification.

How many hours are credited when attending a NJSAT Dinner Seminar?
Dinner seminar hours are equal to 2 hours of asphalt related instruction.

When are certification courses offered?
Certification courses are offered by third party instructors and are not regularly scheduled. Courses are offered periodically during the year and are posted on the NJSAT website Events Calendar. 

I didn't renew my certification and it's now past the 6 months grace period. What do I need to do?
If 6-12 months lapse before recertification, then the individual must retake and pass the respective examination. If a passing grade is not achieved, there is no retest, and the respective course must be repeated. All retest fees will apply.

I'm interested in obtaining an HMA Plant Technologist Level 1 certification. Are there any prerequisites to taking the course?
At least one year of experience in hot-mix asphalt testing, plant inspection or plant operation.

I'm interested in obtaining an HMA Plant Technologist Level 2 certification. Are there any prerequisites to taking the course?
You must be previously certified by NJSAT with the Asphalt Plant Technologist Level 1 certification.

I'm interested in obtaining an HMA Construction Technologist certification. Are there any prerequisites to taking the course?
At least one year of experience in hot-mix asphalt pavement construction or inspection.

I took a certification course but failed the exam. Now what?
If you score 60% or lower, a retest will not be allowed without retaking an approved course. A candidate who fails the exam (scores less than 80% but has a score greater than 60%, will be allowed to take a retest. The Course Administrator shall establish a retest date 30 - 90 days from the initial test date. The candidate is responsible to appear at the scheduled retest or forfeit the right to a retest. The candidate must score 80% or greater on the retest to be considered passing. For those candidates who fail the retest, no further testing will be conducted until the candidate has retaken an approved course. A re-testing fee for administrative costs will be charged at the time of the re-test.

When can I take my retest?
The retest will be administered between 30 and 90 days after the initial exam.

I've failed both the exam and retest. What must I do next to obtain certification?
For those candidates who fail the retest, no further testing will be conducted until the candidate has retaken an approved course. A re-testing fee for administrative costs will be charged at the time of the re-test.

I’ve lost my certificate/ID card and need a new one. What do I need to do?
Go to the Certification & Training, NJSAT Lost Certification Card Replacement, Request Replacement Online or email Jennifer Kanski for further information. There is a $25 fee, payable to NJSAT, for the replacement of a current certificate and/or ID card.
